HOUSE AFRIQUE

House Afrique is a 9 bedroom unit that responds to complex site conditions in a cost effective manner. This home is located on a mountain side looking back into Johannesburg.

The layout of the house is based on a traditional Zulu homestead with a multifunctional open space in the centre reminiscent of “isibaya”(Zulu word for kraal), which is the heart of the scheme. Its architecture is a fusion of African concepts with modern functionality; this resulted in an ‘Afro-modern’ aesthetic.

The house is north facing and uses overhangs to achieve environmental design and to create subtle separations between private and public spaces.
