AUCKLAND WATER is an affordable rental housing scheme targeting a market that earns less than R15000 per month. Affordable housing in South Africa has always had a reputation for low quality design and aesthetics. MDK seeks to set a new standard for social housing in the country, towards creating a cost effective model that competes with the high end market. The minimal space within the units is ‘increased’ through an open design feel. The positioning of openings is such that light reaches maximum (bright color) surface area within a unit to enhance the openness. Slab and wall edges are used to create striking architectural features at a minimal cost.
