ABIDJAN SUSTAINABLE VILLAGE

Ivory Coast

Abidjan Sustainable Village is a 1500 unit mixed income housing scheme, designed with a focus on 100% electrical independence. The project comprises of 4 storey apartment blocks, 2 and 3 storey townhouses and detached single family homes. The scheme is the first of its kind and seeks to realize a new level of `green design` and set a standard for residential design across the continent of Africa. This is achieved through a strategically designed solar collection plan, passive cooling and thermal control as well as the use of robust, low maintenance materials. The master planning of the scheme is aimed at strengthening the socio-cultural and socio-economic quality of the envisaged community.

Each phase is centered around an amenities node, which features smaller retail outlets owned by locals, a public transport hub and some civic facilities. The main retail anchor is positioned at the entrance to the site and will consist of regional shops, towards a sustainable economy for the community and the greater city .

Social cohesion is encouraged through maximised communal spaces located between townhouses and apartments; these are intended to strengthen the neighbourly relation within sub communities. The courtyards are a safe place for the children to play while the parents have 'eyes on the street' from the juxtaposed buildings.

The architectural variety within the development creates vibrant streetscapes
